Day 11 Log Pod To Tarviscio Italy

Day 11 was brutal and the “difficult” rating of this section was underrated. We began with 2,500 of vertical in the first 3 miles, so basically straight up. The footing and trail was sketchy in several areas.  When it takes us 40 minutes to walk 1 mile you know it’s a tough trail.  We had read reviews indicating the trail isn’t well marked in certain areas and we were vigilant to stay on trail.  After three hours of up hill, the hard part started.  The next 9.5 miles we’re on a country highway.  The hard surface of the asphalt was rough on the joints and after several miles of pounding I commandeered a ride to our final destination.

As noted, we are in Italy now but cross back into Slovenia tomorrow.  The language barrier is far greater in Italy, with Chris trying to communicate somewhat with her high school German, but it’s much tougher than in Slovenia where everyone spoke some English. As a (sarcastic) shoutout to the Italians in this region…not all that friendly😥.

Tomorrows hike is a 12 mile route on an asphalt bike path so we may rent bikes or take a bus to the next destination.  As one of the reviews indicated….”it ain’t hiking if you are on a road”!

An awesome story from yesterday was from our “hotel” owner Ricardo.  10 years ago he spent six months traveling through North America, Central America and South America on a motor cycle!!! Absolutely fascinating to hear the stories.

A big shout out to our neighbor Joel for checking on our house and cleaning up some water from the massive rain.  Thank you, thank you!

We still had some amazing pictures and experiences from today

Chris’ first time in Italy.

Chris was able to clear customs without a problem.

A roadside vigil.  Beautiful, but really only visible to the two sinners that were walking on the road.

Mountain Lake

Don’t tell Chris’ parents!

Lots of waterfalls the last two days

We passed a herd of 30+ sheep this morning heading out of town.  All at once they all turned and started “baahing” at us.  After a bunch of laughs, Chris called back to them and they suddenly stopped.  Just goes to show that women always get the last word!!

Harley Davidson advertisement outside the hotel tonight.

View of town tonight in Italy.

Accommodations…comfy.

Italian beer…I didn’t send it back.
